Visitor Access
We ask that parents be aware of our increased vigilance regarding people wearing identification tags within the building.
In the interests of safety, teachers and other staff members may direct visitors back to the office for signing-in and issuing identification tags.
Since staff members as well as our substitute teachers and support staff, cannot possibly know every sibling, parent or grandparent, please do not be offended if you are approached in the halls. We appreciate your understanding when you are questioned regarding your purpose and identity.
All entry doors to the school are kept locked. Students who walk home for lunch during days when we have indoor recess, due to inclement weather, need to enter through the front door upon their return to school.
For security reasons, the front door has now been fitted with a buzzer. During school hours please press the doorbell on the right. A member of the office staff will speak with you and buzz to open the middle door. For out of school care, or after school hours, please continue to press the buzzer on the left.
Let’s keep CJP safe for one and all!
Entry/Exit
Students are assigned doors nearest their classrooms for regular entry and exit. For security purposes, these doors are locked after morning and lunch entry. Students arriving late must use the front door. Students must use their assigned doors for exit at the end of the day; this applies to students taking the bus and those being picked up by parents. All parents should be picking their children up from their classroom doors. When you have more than one child we recommend that you pick the youngest one up first and then proceed to the classroom door of the older student. Due to congestion in the hall, especially the front entrance, we respectfully request that parents remain outside the building when picking up children. We appreciate your understanding regarding this.
End of Day / Changing Home Routine
If you are picking your child up at the end of the day, or changing their home routine, please make these arrangements with your child in advance and send an email or phone call to the teacher. Alternatively you can call the office to let us know or, if your child usually takes the bus, you can leave a message on our bus line, option 1. If your child is to be picked by by someone who is not on their contact list please provide permission in writing so that we have documentation to release the student.
Recess
All students are expected to go outside for recess and lunch recess. We ask your cooperation in ensuring that students come suitably dressed for the weather. An indoor recess will be held when weather conditions pose a safety concern, or when it is colder than –20°C (with or without the wind chill factor).
Playground Supervision
Supervision is provided on the playground starting at 8:55 AM, lunch recess and afternoon recess. Students using the playground after 3:50 PM are assumed to have prior parental permission and are therefore responsible for their own safety.
Fire Drills
Detailed plans are in place to respond to fire and other emergency situations. Fire drills are held on a regular basis. Students and all adults are required to evacuate the building during the drills. Many drills are held without warning, therefore, it is essential that students wear indoor footwear at all times.
Lockdowns
All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.
Evacuation Procedures
In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
Video Surveillance Technology
The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.
Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.
This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.
Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.
For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
