General Health Measures
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. Find out how you can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.
Routine Immunizations
The CBE supports the AHS school-based immunization program.
It is important that you call the school if your child is absent or arriving late. Please report all absences to the Attendance Line at 403-777-6170 ext. 1.
Illness
If your child is ill, please keep them at home until they are well enough to participate in all school activities. If your child becomes ill during the school day, we will contact you and you will be expected to arrange for your child to be picked up as soon as possible.
Allergy Aware School
As you are aware, Captain John Palliser is a healthy foods and “allergen aware” school. This awareness helps to establish a safer learning environment for students with mild and severe allergies. It also helps us model healthy eating practices for our students. At CJP, we have some students with severe allergies to food and non-food items. In order to continue ensuring a healthy, safe, and inclusive environment for all students, please support us in asking your child not to share any of the food that they bring to school.
Parents are asked to notify their child’s teacher of any severe allergies or medical conditions. The Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form and Student Health Plan are kept in a central location and shared on a need-to-now basis. We are a peanut allergy aware school. Please refrain from sending items containing peanuts or other nuts for lunches and snacks.
Medications
Common medications such as Tylenol are not available at school. Should students require staff assistance with personal medications, a Student Health Plan must be on file. Forms must be renewed annually or when instructions change. Authorization to administer medication cannot be accepted over the phone.
For the safety of all our students, all medication, including inhalers, are kept in the office. Please help us ensure that your child has a completed Student Health Plan, that the teacher knows that there is medication at the office, and that your child knows where to go in case of emergency.
Lice
There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.
If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.
As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
