To the CJP Community

It’s hard to believe the school year is already coming to a close. Even in these final days, rich learning continues in classrooms. Teachers are putting the finishing touches on curriculum, assessments, and report cards, while students are still engaged in meaningful experiences.

This week, several field trips offered hands-on opportunities to consolidate learning. The Grade 3|4 classes visited Edworthy Park, where they participated in nature sit spots focused on Indigenous plants, enjoyed a nature-themed scavenger hunt, and played cooperative games. The Grade 1|2 and 2|3 classes spent time in Bowness Park exploring a series of nature stations. Activities included examining animal habitats, investigating the life cycles of pond bugs, studying trees, and designing their dream playgrounds.

Our Grade 6 students also reached a major milestone. They completed Part B of both the ELAL and Math Provincial Achievement Tests, as well as the Social Studies PAT. Congratulations to them all. What an accomplishment!

Today, our Grade 5|6 community classes led a thoughtful and engaging school assembly in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day. The assembly opened with both the CJP and Calgary Public Library Land Acknowledgements, followed by a celebration of Indigenous culture and learning. Students shared their artwork inspired by Norval Morrisseau, an influential Indigenous Canadian artist from the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation. They explored the Seven Sacred Teachings - love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility, and truth - through beautifully crafted animal portraits, with each animal symbolizing a core teaching. The assembly also included a reading of Métis Like Me by Métis author Tasha Hilderman, which explores the identity and lived experiences of the Métis people. To conclude, students introduced and demonstrated four traditional Indigenous games: “Make the Stick Jump” and “Line Tag” from the Blackfoot tradition, “Tatanka Tatanka” from the Dakota tradition, and “Animal Muk” from the Inuit. Each game was shared through video examples and student-led explanations. In the spirit of Reconciliation, the Grade 5|6 students offered a parting message: “May we walk forward together with open hearts, open minds, and a deep respect for the land and all who call it home.”
